It looks like RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate is heading to Liverpool – but there is time for a twist in the tale yet.
Last week, The Athletic claimed that Liverpool were in the process of finalising a deal to sign Konate in a deal worth around €40million (£34million).
A deal isn’t done just yet, but the suggestions was that Konate would be Anfield-bound this summer with the Reds moving early to strike.
They had already missed out on Konate’s fellow Frenchman and Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, so it looked like swooping quickly for Konate would be ideal.
Well, now there’s cause for concern.
Eurosport claim that Liverpool’s bitter rivals Manchester United are now considering making a last-gasp move for Konate.
The Red Devils are seeking a long-term partner for Harry Maguire, and Konate is now one of their prime targets for that role, alongside Raphael Varane, Jules Kounde and Pau Torres.

Inter Milan want to sign Eric Bailly this summer, and United are now eyeing up Konate as a potential – but they would have to be quick.
Liverpool’s move seems to be some way down the line, and United won’t have time to wait until summer to figure out whether they want Konate or not.
Liverpool are still favourites for Konate by a long way, but United’s late interest will be cause for concern for many Reds fans.
