According to the Daily Record, Frank de Boer is interested in the Rangers job – but would only be willing to open talks towards the end of the season.

The Gers are looking for a new manager after announcing on Friday evening that Mark Warburton has resigned, as have assistant manager David Weir and head of recruitment Frank McParland.

The confusion over the situation has subsided, and after Graeme Murty took charge of Sunday’s Scottish Cup tie with Morton, the search is on for a new boss.

Fans are keen to see the club make an ambitious appointment by luring Frank de Boer back to the club, and whilst a move seemed unlikely, the Daily Record now report that the Dutchman is in fact interested in replacing Warburton.

De Boer, 46, spent six months with Rangers during his playing days, scoring two goals in 17 games whilst playing alongside brother Ronald at Ibrox.

Since turning his hand to management, De Boer enjoyed a great spell with Ajax, winning four successive Eredivisie titles before leaving last summer, and joining Inter Milan in August.

After less than three months in the job, De Boer was sacked by Inter, and as a free agent, he’s now believed to be keen on the Rangers job – but is only willing to open talks at the end of the season.

That would be a hugely ambitious appointment for Rangers, and one that would rival Celtic’s move to land Brendan Rodgers last summer, but it leaves them considering their next move in the meantime.

The Scottish Sun report that Alex McLeish is willing to accept a post until the end of the season, stepping into see Rangers through a rocky time just as Stuart McCall did in 2015.

McLeish, 58, appears to be the ideal candidate to take the job on a short-term basis. A Glaswegian with close ties to Rangers, McLeish managed the club for more than four-and-a-half years, winning two league titles.

With a 66% win rate at Ibrox, McLeish impressed in his first spell with Rangers, and a second could be on the horizon despite his patchy managerial record in recent years.

Spells with Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, Genk and Zamalek since the summer of 2011 haven’t amounted to much for the Scot, and he may well want a short-term spell with Rangers to try and boost his reputation again.

With an understanding of the Rangers fanbase and a knowledge of Scottish football, McLeish could be perfect for the Gers on a short-term basis whilst they need somebody to come in and steady the ship – and that could free up Rangers to make a stunning move for De Boer at the end of the season, though chairman Dave King would have to dig deep to fund such a deal.
