According to Italian newspaper Corriere Dello Sport, as noted by Calcio Mercato, Tottenham failed with a move to sign AC Milan ace Niccolo Zanellato.

AC Milan have famously faded in recent years, as they have won the Serie A title just once in the last ten years, but there are signs of a recovery at the San Siro.

Manager Vincenzo Montella has been harnessing some top young talent this season, as the likes of Gianluigi Donnarumma, Alessio Romagnoli, Davide Calabria and Manuel Locatelli have all become important first-team players.

Milan’s focus on youth rather than signing cast-offs from elsewhere is seen as a way to get them back amongst Europe’s elite, but they also need to be able to keep those youngsters at the club.

Midfielder Niccolo Zanellato is another youngster tipped to have a bright future with Milan, and he signed a new contract with the club until 2019 last month, with Tutto Mercato Web reporting that it was to fend off interest from Everton.

However, the Toffees seemingly aren’t the only Premier League team to have registered an interest in signing Zanellato, as Italian newspaper Corriere Dello Sport reported, as noted by Calcio Mercato, that Tottenham also made a move for him.

The 18-year-old midfielder may not have featured in Serie A this term, but he did play in pre-season, coming on as a substitute against Chelsea in the International Champions Cup.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino may have wanted Zanellato to become the latest young star at White Hart Lane, but it’s claimed that Tottenham’s offer was met with ‘stiff resistance’ from Milan as they attempt to keep their starlets at the club.

With his contract now extended until 2019, Zanellato’s future has been tied to Milan, and he’ll hope to make a huge impact over the next three years – and it remains to be seen whether Tottenham continue to keep tabs on the Italian youngster.
