Chelsea have reportedly joined the race to sign Spurs target Joao Cancelo.
According to Sky Sports, Chelsea have joined the race to sign Valencia right back Joao Cancelo, amid links to both Juventus and Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
The Blues have splashed the cash on new signings this summer as Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Alvaro Morata have arrived from Roma, Monaco and Juventus respectively, boosting Antonio Conte’s squad.
However, Conte may still want to bring in new faces before the transfer deadline in order to try and retain the Premier League title, and right wing back should be a position of priority for the Italian.
Victor Moses was a real surprise last season, but he has little cover behind him unless Cesar Azpilicueta shifts over to right wing back, and many may even feel that the Blues can improve on Moses anyway.
Now, Sky Sports report that Chelsea are now joining the race to sign Valencia right back Joao Cancelo, who has been heavily touted with a move away from the La Liga side this summer.
Cancelo, 22, joined Valencia from Benfica on loan in 2014 before making the move permanent a year later, and he has emerged as one of the top young right backs in Europe during his time in Spain.
Pacey and versatile having played all the way up the right flank, Cancelo is already a Portugal international with three caps in five games, and it’s claimed that Chelsea watched him in action for Portugal at the Under-21 European Championships in Poland earlier this summer.
Earlier this week, the Daily Mail claimed that Juventus and Tottenham were going head-to-head in the battle for the £25million-rated right back, and Spurs – who have yet to sign a player this summer – won’t want to lose out to a London rival like Chelsea in the race for Cancelo, given that they’re trying to replace Kyle Walker following his move to Manchester City, and manager Mauricio Pochettino is described as being ‘eager’ to sign Cancelo.
