Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie claims that Middlesbrough and Michael Carrick are showing the ‘strongest interest’ in a move for long-term Ibrox target Ross Stewart – ahead of Rangers, Brentford and Crystal Palace.
Stewart, 26, has thrown himself onto the radar of some top clubs after a wonderful 2021-22 campaign. He scored 26 goals as Sunderland gained promotion to the Championship – and he continued that form this time around.
Despite going up a division, Stewart has still managed six goals in eight games, as well as laying on three assists. He has been limited to just eight appearances due to a long-term hamstring issue, but is now back. Fit, and firing.
Back in the summer, The Northern Echo said Stewart was Rangers’ top striker target. They signed Antonio Colak instead, but interest in Stewart remains. Especially given he scored against Beale’s QPR back in August.
Now, Downie gives an update. He says Rangers are one of the clubs still interested in Stewart. But, Middlesbrough are showing the most interest in the two-time Scotland star. Palace, Brentford, Blackburn and Stoke are also keen.
Downie: Middlesbrough leading Rangers and Palace in Stewart race
Rangers do need a striker. Even if Alfredo Morelos remains and Antonio Colak continues to bang in the goals, Rangers need another option up top. Largely because, Beale has hinted he is keen at playing two up top at times.
Stewart is out of contract at the end of the season. Of all the clubs interested, Rangers do have an advantage in that they can arrange a pre-contract deal. English sides will not be able to do so until the final month of his contract.
Talks over a new deal at Sunderland have reached an impasse. A move to the Premier League might just come too early for Stewart who will want to remain first choice. A Championship move is sideways. Rangers would be ideal.
