Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil is attracting interest in the final hours of the transfer window with Liverpool holding an interest.

Liverpool have been scouting Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil with the Black Cats no doubt hoping the window passes without him leaving.

That is according to The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, who claims that Neil is on the radar of Premier League clubs.

Some of those clubs may be tempted to launch deadline day moves for Neil in the hope of a last-gasp deal.

McGrath adds that Liverpool have sent scouts to watch Neil in action ahead of a potential move.

We can’t really see Liverpool launching a move to sign Neil today, with Bayern Munich ace Ryan Gravenberch their top target for deadline day.

The only way we can really see Sunderland and Liverpool coming to an agreement today is if Neil heads back to Wearside on loan.

This may be one for January or next summer with Liverpool seemingly keen on Neil but not absolutely desperate for his signature on deadline day.

Who is Liverpool target Dan Neil?

Neil hails from South Shields and grew up supporting Sunderland before joining their youth ranks as a kid.

Neil has progressed up through the Sunderland ranks and has now racked up more than 100 first-team appearances for the Black Cats.

The 21-yer-old has also picked up three caps for the England Under-20’s having excelled for Sunderland.

Neil has caught the eye in red and white stripes with TalkSPORT commentator Ian Danter even comparing him to former Manchester United ace Michael Carrick.

If Liverpool make a move to sign Neil, it will remind fans of the 2011 deal to sign Jordan Henderson, another midfielder from Sunderland.

In fact, Neil admitted to The Athletic last year that Henderson is an ‘inspiration’ having progressed at Sunderland, become a top Premier League player and England international regular.

A move today seems hard to imagine but Neil may well love the chance to follow in Henderson’s footsteps with a move to Anfield.
