Reportedly set for Leeds United move, Pawel Cibicki was tracked by Manchester United this year

Leeds United are reportedly close to signing Malmo striker Pawel Cibicki.

Leeds United continue to contemplate life after Chris Wood, as the club reportedly close in on a new signing, in Malmo striker Pawel Cibicki ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline.

The Whites saw New Zealand international Wood leave for Burnley last week, completing a big-money move to Turf Moor after smashing 30 goals in all competitions last season.

Wood made a bright start to life with Burnley, scoring a last-gasp equaliser against Tottenham on Sunday, but life goes on for Leeds, and they picked up an impressive 2-0 win away at Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening.

Thomas Christiansen’s men are impressing right now, and whilst Jay-Roy Grot has arrived from NEC Nijmegen to partially replace Wood, another striker is on the verge of arriving at Elland Road.

Fotboll Skanalen in Sweden report that Malmo’s Pawel Cibicki is all set for a move to Leeds, in a deal worth around £1.5million – and Whites fans will certainly hope to see him succeed more than the last striker Leeds signed from Sweden, Marcus Antonsson.

Cibicki may not be a household name in England, but he has impressed in his native Sweden with five goals and three assists in his last 20 games for Malmo, and he has even earned the odd comparison to a young Zlatan Ibrahimovic, having also come up through the ranks with hometown club Malmo and displayed great technique and ability on the ball.

The chances of Cibicki truly becoming anything near Zlatan’s level seem slim, The Mirror did report back in May that Manchester United had sent scouts to watch Cibicki, whilst Ajax were also interested as the two clubs looked to towards a player earning comparisons to Zlatan, who had played for both clubs.

Whilst a £7.5million fee was mentioned then, Leeds are set to sign the former Swedish Under-21 international for just a fifth of that price, which could well prove to be a bargain for the Whites.

Fans may have wanted a big-name addition to replace Wood, but with such big clubs allegedly keen on Cibicki just months ago, this could prove to be a smart, calculated move from director of football Victor Orta, with the Swede set to arrive for just a tenth of the money received for Wood.
