Spurs are reportedly interested in signing Manchester United defender Jones.
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Manchester United defender Phil Jones with plenty of competition beginning to swarm around the centre-back – but Jones would be the perfect signing for Spurs, financially.
The Sun claim that United will activate a clause in the 26-year-old’s current contract, which will see him remain at Old Trafford for another season beyond the current campaign.
The former Blackburn Rovers man is in the final months of his current deal, but that extension will see him remain at United until the summer of 2020 – unless any interested parties can prize him away from the club.
Spurs are not the only side said to be interested in the England international, with Arsenal also keen to bring him to north London as Unai Emery looks to build on his impressive start as Arsene Wenger’s replacement.
But there is one factor that may convince Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to switch all attention into landing Jones, and that is his reported wages. Spotrac claims he earns just £50,000 a week at United.
Levy is renowned for keeping a tight stronghold on the wage budget at Spurs, with The Guardian claiming Harry Kane is the club’s highest earner after he signed a £200,000-a-week deal in the summer.
Spotrac report only five Spurs players earn above £100,000 or above, in Kane, Son Heung-min, Erik Lamela, Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris. Compare that to United, who have 10.
Indeed, the same website reports that Jones is earning just £50,000 a week and that would fit perfectly into Levy’s budget plans, as he continues to save every last penny with the club’s new stadium set to open in February.
Spurs need a new centre-back with Toby Alderweireld’s future in doubt and adding Jones could see them pick up a bargain, especially in terms of wages.
