Hirving Lozano has been removed from the transfer list with Napoli coach Gennaro Gattuso performing a dramatic U-turn on the reported Wolves and Everton target, according to Calciomercato.
While the Mexican international didn’t exactly set the world alight during his 15 minutes on the pitch in Tuesday’s 2-0 loss at Inter Milan, one moment in particular would have warmed the cockles of his World Cup-winning coach.
As Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic dallied on the ball, Lozano chased him down like a lion hunting a gazelle on the prairie.
While the £34 million winger received a yellow card rather than a goal for his efforts, clattering into Handanovic at full pelt, nothing could have epitomised Lozano’s sudden change of approach more than this.
As recently as June, the former PSV winger was thrown out of a training session by Gattuso and left out of the Coppa Italia victory over Juventus, with the Napoli boss publicly criticising his attitude (ESPN).
Since then, however, Lozano has pulled himself off the canvas and got his act together at last.
Suddenly, he is finding opportunities in the starting XI easier to come by, while goals against Hellas Verona and Genoa were his first in Serie A since November.
According to Calciomercato, Lozano is no longer up for sale with his performances on and off the pitch encouraging Gattuso to give him another chance.
Il Mattino reported back in March that a reunion with former Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti was on the cards at Everton, while West Ham United were also willing to pay £25 million (AreaNapoli).
And then there was Wolves (Calciomercato in March).
For now, however, Lozano is going nowhere.
