Of course West Ham could and should have numerous targets for any one position, but these are two vastly different midfielders who both work best in an advanced central role.
One of the big problems with West Ham in recent seasons has been their failure to sign players that fit a specific system, resulting in players like Hernandez being deployed on the wing, or a series of midfielders playing up front.
Fellaini and Cairney would both expect to start at a club like West Ham and yet they could not both fit into the same team, while they also play very contrasting styles of football.
Belgium international Fellaini thrives on long balls and physical battles, with Cairney running the show at Fulham, one of the best footballing sides in the Championship.
So just what is West Ham’s plan? Right now, they do not appear to have one.
