Aston Villa and Tottenham are seemingly hunting for Ollie Watkins signature this summer and the Brentford player was left out of their matchday squad for Sunday’s League Cup clash.

Brentford beat fellow Championship side Wycombe on penalties, with new signing Ivan Toney starting the match and Watkins being left out of the squad altogether.

Interestingly enough, another Villa target, Rico Henry [The Daily Mail], started the game and put in a top display, so a potential move for him could be wider off the mark.

The Sun on Sunday (6 September, page 61) have recently claimed that Spurs are making a ‘drastic late move’ for Brentford’s top-scorer from the 2019/20 Championship campaign.

It’s quite clear now that Watkins is heading towards the Premier League, it’s just a case of North London or the West Midlands? Or even somewhere else.

Villa need a striker more than Spurs because Jose Mourinho already has one of the best in the country at his disposal in Harry Kane.

Spurs just need more depth to their attacking line, and with Watkins ability to play up top and out wide, he would fit in perfectly at the club.

Equally, the Torquay-born player would also thrive at Villa and perhaps feel more comfortable because he would earn more game time, and also reunite with his former manager, Dean Smith, who will know his game inside and out.

Whilst it’s realistic for the Villa owners to splash the cash on a Championship player, as they did last summer, it will be interesting to see if Daniel Levy will do the same.

He’s not known to make such deals and a possible bidding war may result in the Villa Park outfit coming out on top.
