Matt Doherty is seemingly on the verge of joining Tottenham, but the Wolves man may now regret his comments about Arsenal back in March.

The 28-year-old told Wolves’ official website that he was a ‘big’ Arsenal fan in his youth and ‘even now’ he still looks out for their results – if he does put on that Spurs shirt, he will no doubt be reminded of his previous comments.

One thing is for sure if the versatile Irishman puts on the Spurs shirt then he’ll have to stop looking out for those results – he is pretty close to joining up with Jose Mourinho, as reported by Sky Sports.

If Doherty signs for Spurs, he won’t be the first, nor the last player to have ended up playing for a rival club they used to support as a kid, but this is what he said about the Gunners back in March.

“I was a big Arsenal fan growing up,” Doherty told Wolves’ official website in March. “Bergkamp was my favourite player, I used to get the kits for Christmas.

“Even now, I look out for their results and now I get to play and score against them, which is unbelievable.”

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer signings

  1. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

    £15 million; Southampton

  2. Joe Hart

    Free

  3. Matt Doherty

    £13 million; Wolves

  4. Sergio Reguilon

    £25 million; Real Madrid

  5. Gareth Bale

    Loan; Real Madrid

  6. Carlos Vinicius

    Loan; Benfica

  7. Joe Rodon

    £12 million; Swansea

Spurs may be landing one of the signings of the summer if they can get Doherty through the door because he has been an underrated figure at Molineux during their rise from the Championship to Europa League football.

Doherty, who can also operate on the left, has mainly played as a right wing-back for Wolves, so it’ll be interesting to see how Jose Mourinho will utilise his talents.

It does provide him with a chance to play a back three with more freedom now because he will have more personnel who can excel in that system.
