Bleacher Report recently claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have joined Arsenal in the race for Paris Saint-Germain’s Thiago Silva.
The experienced Brazilian will be out of contract at the end of this month. PSG’s Director of Football, Leonardo, recently revealed that Silva will leave the French champions this summer as a free agent. (Goal)
A number of clubs are interested in signing the veteran defender this summer including Tottenham. Jose Mourinho’s side are set to lose an experienced defender in Jan Vertonghen for free in the coming days.
What better way to replace one experienced defender leaving for free than by signing a more accomplished defender on a free transfer?
Silva would bring a ton of experience and leadership to Tottenham’s squad next season. However, he, like many others, has had a few problems with Mourinho in the past.
The Brazilian scored the winner against Mourinho’s Chelsea to knock them out of the Champions League a few years ago. The Blues did the exact same a year earlier which made everyone think that PSG were looking for revenge.
Silva, however, dismissed any talks of revenge but instead accused Mourinho of showing no respect to his side ahead of the tie.
He told Goal back in 2015: “It was not revenge. But they didn’t respect us, especially Mourinho.”
“After the draw, he said he preferred to play against PSG because Paris was near London and it was easier for supporters to come. But I don’t think that was the reason. Mourinho said that because of his win against us last year.”
Mourinho would certainly stand his ground and claim that he fully respected the French champions. However, only Silva can tell if he still has that on his mind ahead of a possible move.
Silva under Mourinho would be a sight to see. The Spurs boss would love to have a defender of his quality take charge of his backline, but could his one comment from over five years ago could cost him a fantastic defender? Only time will tell.
