Tottenham Hotspur are keen to sign Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope, according to The Mirror.

Goalkeeper is an emerging problem position for Tottenham with Hugo Lloris’ recent errors causing concern.

Pope is a quality goalkeeper who earned England caps earlier this year, but he is also not a goalkeeper who is a long term replacement for Lloris.

There are a series of questions a move for Pope would prompt.

The first would be whether it meant the end for first choice stopper Hugo Lloris, and it would seem the Frenchman would at least be available at the right price, with Pope providing cover as a stop gap.

It would also be a sign that Spurs are ready to move on from long term back up Michel Vorm, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

Yet this would also be an insult to third choice Paulo Gazzaniga, who has stepped up impressively this season. Where would Pope’s arrival leave him?

Then you would have to ask whether Pope would be willing to move, if he is not first choice. Tottenham are an attractive club to want to play for, but he needs to play first team football.

Pope lacks the profile to satisfy the expectations for a club which aspires to challenge for trophies. Spending has not been Tottenham’s strong point in recent years, but Pope would seem like an underwhelming replacement for Lloris.

Another signing likely would be required for a more high profile goalkeeper with greater potential who can be the club’s number one, if Lloris really is off.
