Wolverhampton Wanderers were tipped to bring Portugal star Goncalo Guedes to the Premier League before he joined La Liga giants Valencia for £36m.
It would be unfair to suggest that Goncalo Guedes is a ‘one season wonder’ but he’s certainly failing to live up to the standards set by his outstanding debut campaign at Valencia.
The Portuguese winger was a revelation in La Liga, producing nine assists to fire Los Che back into the Champions League. But since making his loan move from Paris Saint Germain permanent, Guedes’ form has dropped alarmingly.
Valencia have struggled as a whole, languishing in 15th in La Liga and exiting the Champions League at the group stage, but the 22-year-old is perhaps the player who has disappointed the most. The so-called ‘new Cristiano Ronaldo’ has failed to score in 15 games in all competitions.
And, as reported by Marca, there have now been suggestions of a rift between Guedes and his manager, the famously demanding Marcelino, with the former Villarreal boss seemingly less than impressed with the winger’s lack of impact.
So Wolverhampton Wanderers should be watching as the situation develops.
Before the one-time Benfica starlet sealed his £36m move to Valencia (BBC), Wolves were heavily linked with Jorge Mendes once again at the heart of a deal. L’Equipe stated that the Premier League newcomers were keen to make Guedes their marquee signing.
And while the explosive forward has struggled badly at the Mestalla of late, no one could question his talent and potential. Maybe a fresh start, a different scene and a new manager is exactly what Portugal’s greatest raw talent needs.
