Neil Lennon recently confirmed that Celtic are keen on the services of Middlesbrough midfielder Paddy McNair, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
At this moment in time, it is of course just interest, but if Celtic can secure a deal for the defensive-minded 24-year-old then they would be signing a player of real quality.
McNair is a player of many talents. He can play in a flat back four or he can deploy himself in his preferred position, which is in front of the defence.
There’s no doubt that Lennon has to play McNair in a defensive midfield role if he does put pen-to-paper because he would be the best player in the SPFL in that position if he does that.
There’s no-one in Scotland’s top-flight that will match McNair’s talents in that role. He is an excellent reader of the game, he is powerful on the ball and can carry the ball from deep positions and into the attacking third.
The Northern Ireland international could possibly become the signing of the summer for Lennon if he gets going because he has the qualities to have an impact across the pitch.
Whether it’s matching a Jermaine Defoe for his movement, an Alfredo Morelos for his physicality or stopping a quick-footed playmaker from getting into attacking positions – McNair could do the defensive job that Lennon desperately craves.
During the recently concluded Championship season, the now-sacked Middlesbrough boss Tony Pulis used him in various roles. From playing him at centre-back to playing him on the right-wing. No wonder the experienced man received his p45.
Given the right guidance, and working under a manager that can manage his talents properly, McNair can produce the goods for Celtic if they push for a deal for him.
