Will Newcastle United do the unthinkable and go on a spending spree before the transfer window slams shut on August 8?

For the second time this year, Newcastle have broken their own transfer record by first signing Miguel Almiron and then securing the signature of Brazilian hitman Joelinton. But could they make yet another big-money purchase?

The Sun recently claimed that Newcastle want to sign Burnley’s £30 million winger Dwight McNeil, who has been attracting interest from a number of clubs this summer, including those in the Champions League.

For many, the reported fee for McNeil, who enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at Turf Moor last season, maybe a little high, but in the long-term, he would no doubt be worth it.

McNeil is the type of signing Newcastle United need. He is a young, hungry winger, who would improve Steve Bruce’s frontline as he prepares for a tough Premier League campaign.

There is a reason why Champions League clubs are keen on McNeil’s services, and if Newcastle can sign the youngster, get the best out of him, take his game to the next level then the rewards would be huge.

Last season, McNeil played 22 Premier League matches for Sean Dyche’s side, scoring three goals and supplying five assists [transfermarkt].

That record is pretty impressive because it is for a defensive-minded team, which Newcastle will seemingly be under Bruce, and he came into the team and produced those results when Burnley were struggling last season. So, he showcased his ability to perform under pressure and in difficult situations.

Along with young ambitious signings, Newcastle also need ready-made players if they are to take that next step, but the latter is not going to happen with Mike Ashley in charge.

Therefore, signing the best talents out there is their best option and McNeil is one of those players and he would add more quality to Newcastle’s forward line if he were to make a switch from Turf Moor to St James’ Park.
