The reported target of Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers was omitted from his current team’s squad today.
The Record reported earlier this week that Rangers boss Steven Gerrard travelled for France to discuss the signing of Edson Mexer this week.
The 30-year-old centre-back is out of contract with Rennes next month and it seems like the Rangers manager may interested in a Bosman deal.
It looks like the interest may be genuine and further news may be on the way after developments in France.
Mexer, who stands at 6’2, was left out of Rennes’ squad entirely for the 2-2 draw at Toulouse this afternoon.
He could of course be injured, but he played 90 minutes for the Ligue 1 side on Wednesday and the timing of this omission could be considered a little too coincidental.
Whatever happens, Gerrard needs another centre-back at Rangers this summer – badly.
Gareth McAuley turns 40 this year and Joe Worrall seems set to return to parent club Nottingham Forest, leaving Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic as Gerrard’s only options.
