Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed on their official website that Steven Fletcher and Morgan Fox have rejected new contracts amid reported interest from West Bromwich Albion and Rangers in the Owls duo.
Wednesday fans have watched on in horror as their club jump from crisis to catastrophe in recent years – but there is a very real concern that the worst is still to come.
The patented ‘Garry Monk slide’ looks unstoppable with the Steel City giants winning just one of their last 11 games either side of ‘Project Re-start’.
And while Wednesday are already hovering nervously above the relegation zone, a potential points deduction would leave them hanging onto their Championship status by their fingernails.
So the last thing the Hillsborough faithful wanted to see was that two of their most impressive performers have rejected the chance to sign a new contract – short-term or otherwise.
Fletcher and Fox are due to become free-agents next week and Monk’s crumbling side might have to battle the drop without their 13-top scorer and arguably their most influential defender.

33-year-old Fletcher is apparently a summer target for West Brom, Derby County and Stoke, while Fox could be on his way to Ibrox as a potential replacement for Rangers’ coveted Croatian international Borna Barisic.
The tough-tackling full-back also has admirers at Burnley, Norwich, Middlesbrough and, like Fletcher, West Brom, according to TEAMtalk.
And with Sheffield Wednesday on the verge of potential disaster, who can blame two star players for jumping ship?
