Reported Newcastle United and Everton striker target described as ‘maverick’

Reported Newcastle United and Everton target Alfredo Morelos has been described as a “maverick” by former Rangers striker Gary McSwegan.

McSwegan, who played for Rangers in the 1980s and 1990s, has raved about Morelos, who is a key player in manager Steven Gerrard’s side.

The fromer Scotland international believes that Rangers striker is “a real handful” when he is on form.

According to The Scottish Sun, Newcastle and Everton are among the clubs interested in signing Morelos from Rangers in the summer transfer window.

McSwegan told The Herald: “Morelos is a bit of a maverick. He drifts wide and drops deep and wins free-kicks.

“I would like to see him stay in the penalty box. When he is on form and is fully focused he is a real handful.

“He prefers leading the line by himself. He likes to take the responsibility on his shoulders. But when you look back on the 2019/20 season you can see that a lot of the goals he scored came from good service from wide areas.

“That is essential for him. He takes up good positions in the box and is generally quite reliable if you get the ball to him.”

Morelos scored 12 goals and provided three assists in the Scottish Premiership, and scored six goals and provided one assist in the Europa League for Rangers this season, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.

Good signing for Newcastle United or Everton?

Morelos has done well for Rangers in Scotland, and the 23-year-old is good enough to play for a club in the Premier League.

With Joelinton struggling for goals for Newcastle this season and Dominic Calvert-Lewin just starting to find his feet in the goalscoring department for Everton, both the Magpies and the Toffees could do with a young and dynamic striker, and Morelos does fit the bill.
