Motherwell goalkeeper Mark Gillespie has admitted that his immediate future is ‘up in the air’ after reports suggested that he could make a shock return to Newcastle United this summer, while speaking to the Daily Record.
If you wanted an indication of how much, and how rapidly, the Magpies’ transfer plans have been transformed by suggestions that they could soon be taken over by a Saudi billionaire, look no further than this.
Before footballing superstars a la Edinson Cavani, Arturo Vidal, Dries Mertens and Gareth Bale were being linked with a mega-money move to St James’ Park, Newcastle found themselves tipped to sign a 28-year-old former academy graduate on the cheap.
Gillespie’s contract at Mothewell is due to expire in July and the Record claimed that the Tyneside giants were lining up a deal to re-sign a shot-stopper who spent eight years in the north east between 2000 and 2008.
And the man himself seems none the wiser about where he will be plying his trade when 2020/21 kicks off.

“My future is up in the air at the moment until everyone knows the situation with the wider game,” says the Newcastle-born glovesman.
“Clubs, players, managers don’t know what’s coming next week never mind next season.
“Once it becomes clear where the leagues stand and things like that there will be conversations to be had.”
With Martin Dubravka in the form of his life, making more saves than any other Premier League goalkeeper this season, Gillespie would have to get used to life on the bench if he does return to familiar surroundings this summer.
