Newcastle United have been handed some rather mixed news about the future of Edinson Cavani. According to Tuttomercatoweb, the PSG legend has rejected offers from China and Qatar, but he still wants an £18 million deal from his next employers.
What can be gained from this, then, is that the Uruguayan veteran does indeed want to increase his bank balance. But his driving force remains a sporting, rather than financial, motive.
After all, why else would Cavani reject the chance to move to the Far East or Qatar? Obviously, the highest goal-scorer in Paris Saint-Germain’s history thinks he still has a lot to offer at the top level of European football.
The Chronicle claimed recently that Cavani’s camp were intrigued by the prospect of a move to the Premier League in the autumn of his career. A man who helped transform PSG into one of the dominant forces on the continent may be keen to repeat the trick at Newcastle, with Mohammed Bin Salman’s billions threatening to awaken this sleeping giant from it’s slumber.
According to TMW, Cavani is still favouring a move to an established European giant, however, with Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid his most likely destinations.
Yet if Newcastle are willing to meet the 33-year-old’s demands, an £18 million bi-annual deal which would take him through to 2022, maybe there is a slight chance that Cavani could be donning a famous number nine shirt next season.
For all you non-mathematicians out there, that £18 million deal means Cavani would take home £150,000-a-week.
