Chris Gloster has returned to the US with New York City FC after seeing his move to Newcastle United fall through, as reported by Eindhovens Dagblad.

When discussing the pros and cons of Brexit, it’s unlikely the difficulties involved in signing a teenage left-back featured too heavily in the arguments of any Remainer.

But in January Newcastle discovered that, in a post-Brexit world, signing a talented young footballer has become that little bit harder.

According to ESPN, the Magpies tried to bring Gloster to St James’ Park two months ago only to be informed by the FA the PSV Eindhoven prospect wouldn’t qualify for a work permit under new regulations.

The Chronicle reported Newcastle hadn’t given up hope and planned to watch Gloster closely before potentially renewing their interest in the summer.

But with the 20-year-old heading back across the Atlantic, we can draw a line under this transfer saga.

New Jersey-born Gloster has joined MLS outfit New York City, returning to the Big Apple following a previous spell at local rivals Red Bulls.

Newcastle wasted little time in finding an alternative option, however.

On Friday, Steve Bruce’s side confirmed the arrival of England youth star Matthew Bondswell, the former Nottingham Forest prospect arriving at St James’ Park after a spell at RB Leipzig.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be at such a big club,” Bondswell told the club’s official website.

“I’m really looking forward to getting started with the boys and hopefully doing some successful things in the future.”
