Newcastle United were linked with Real Sociedad’s Geronimo Rulli.

According to a report by Mundo Deportivo during the summer, Newcastle United made an enquiry over the possibility of signing Real Sociedad goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.
The Argentine shot-stopper has long been linked with a move to the Magpies, and manager Rafa Benitez was reportedly considering bolstering his goalkeeper options by bringing him in to compete with Karl Darlow and Martin Dubravka.
Ultimately Newcastle didn’t complete a move for the 26-year-old, and fortunately for them it seems that has worked out for the best as Rulli has started the La Liga campaign in disastrous form.
The Real Sociedad man has made several high-profile mistakes in recent weeks, conceding sloppy goals against Real Vallecano and La Liga leaders Barcelona as the Catalans came from behind to win in the Basque country.
Reported by Marca ahead of Real Sociedad’s clash with Valencia, Rulli is said to have been dropped from first-team duties by coach Aiser Garitano as a result of his poor form this term.
Rulli has so far been favoured as the number one by the Spanish club’s new coach, but now Miguel Angel Moya will replace him in the starting XI and look to consolidate himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Newcastle have been handed a tricky start to their Premier League campaign with fixtures against Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur as they currently sit in the bottom three.
Dubravka has started every league game for the Magpies thus far, and he has needed to be in top form with the Slovakia international keeping clean sheets in the away draws at Crystal Palace and Cardiff City.
With Rulli in net and on his current form it could have been a lot worse for Newcastle, therefore they can count themselves fortunate they missed out on signing him when linked during the summer.
