The Reds were expected to revisit negotiations for the 24-year-old after the tournament’s conclusion, but it appears a new star target has emerged for Jurgen Klopp, in Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio, according to Diario Gol.
The logistics of completing a permanent deal for Madrid’s star prodigy at this stage are tricky but, if Liverpool can pull it off, they would have a sensational addition to the squad; one that would diversify their attack more than Fekir.
Fekir would have undoubtedly brought more ingenuity to the Reds’ attack, but he would not solve a long-spanning issue that has cost the club points constantly throughout the Premier League season.
Liverpool’s lack of choice in wide areas often coincides with a lack of width, as both Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah favour cutting back, looking for inverted runs into the box, which against resolute defences can be tough.
Asensio, as a naturally left footed winger, is becoming renowned for his quality byline delivery, using his pace to stretch the pitch before delivering pin-point crosses into the box on his favoured foot, often catching recovering defenders out.
The Spanish international would hugely improve Liverpool’s attack, and the extra dimension of his play could be pivotal in the side turning a number of bore-draws into vital points in the chase for Premier League glory next term.
