Kenny Miller will leave Rangers for the third time at the end of the season – but will he be replaced by Motherwell’s Louis Moult?
The fact that Rangers handing a new one-year contract to Kenny Miller at the start of the summer seemed like a no-brainer highlighted their overreliance on the veteran striker.
The 37-year-old was the only player in Pedro Caixinha’s squad to hit double figures in the Scottish Premiership last season while his wily movement and expert finishing meant he was Rangers’ go-to man when a goal was required.
However, while Miller has still been a regular starter in the opening weeks of the new season, the signs are that Caixinha’s side are finally starting to plan for life without a player whose first of three spells as a Rangers player came all the way back in the year 2000.
Alfredo Morelos, the clinical Colombian who has five in seven games, already looks like Miller’s long-term successor, blessed with the same instinctive poaching ability and electric movement inside the penalty area.
And the Scottish Sun reports that Rangers are also plotting a renewed move for Motherwell striker Louis Moult, who they failed to sign in the summer after refusing to meet his hefty £500,000 asking price. The 25-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and Rangers will hope Motherwell will be more receptive to offers.
Moult is one of the most reliable goalscorers in the league, hitting 15 in each of the last two seasons.
And reports that Rangers want to add the former Stoke City youngster to a forward line already containing Morelos and Mexican international Eduardo Herrera suggests that Caixinha is aiming to ensure Miller is not missed when his current deal expires in 2018.
