Travian Sousa has signed a contract with MLS outfit Sporting Kansas City after Brexit scuppered a potential move to Liverpool or Manchester United, as reported by the US club’s official website.

Arsenal weren’t the only club left frustrated in the transfer window by new regulations that make signing talented, Europe-based youngsters more difficult than ever.

The Gunners hoped to snap up CSKA Moscow’s Bulgarian defender Valentin Antov in the January window.

But, when Brexit restrictions made a potential switch to the Emirates “impossible”, Antov packed his bags and headed to Bologna instead.

Sousa, meanwhile, is now looking to make a name for himself on the other side of the Atlantic.

The 19-year-old left-back had grown frustrated by a lack of first-team opportunities with Hamburg in Germany and was on the lookout for a fresh start after seeing his contract cancelled by mutual consent in the autumn.

According to 90Min, Liverpool and Manchester United both showed an interest.

But once 2020 became 2021, any hopes Jurgen Klopp or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had of getting their mitts on a highly talented young defender went up in smoke.

Sousa, who honed his trade at Sacramento Republic, has now returned to his native America with Sporting Kansas City.

Then again, when one door closes another opens. There’s plenty of home-grown talent in Liverpool’s academy who will be boosted by a cut in competition arriving from overseas.
