The player is said to be closing in on a move to Leeds United but is he really good enough for the Whites?

According to a recent report from the Daily Mail, Leeds United are on the verge of signing Werder Bremen goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald for £400,000, and while that is a very reasonable fee in today’s inflated transfer market, his recent performances leave a lot to be desired.

In fact, Leeds fans may be worried to hear that in his last three Bundesliga matches, Wiedwald conceded 13 goals in three consecutive defeats.

Bremen lost 4-3 to Cologne, 5-3 to Hoffenheim and 4-3 to Borussia Dortmund, and while their fans will have been entertained during the high-scoring encounters, Leeds supporters may be hoping Wiedwald has got his shaky performances out of his system before seemingly heading to Elland Road.

While Leeds currently have Rob Green between the sticks, they are unlikely to be signing a 27-year-old first-choice stopper from the German top flight unless they see him as a long-term replacement for the veteran.

The problem is, Green has done nothing to suggest he is ready to hang his gloves up just yet, and Wiedwald could be fighting a losing battle to be number one for at least the next 12 months.

Whatever happens next season, if Wiedwald arrives he needs to show that his most recent domestic outings were an anomaly rather than a sign of things to come.

New Leeds boss Thomas Christiansen will want to build from the back, with Pontus Jansson likely to be key yet again, protecting whoever is between the sticks.

That said, whenever he is called upon, Wiedwald needs to be up to the task.
