Everton can sign Sergio Romero for just £2.5 million if they renew their interest, with Manchester United set to grant the goalkeeper’s wish to leave Old Trafford, as reported by the Mirror.

For this 96-capped Argentina international, life at the Theatre of Dreams has become something of a personal nightmare.

Romero seemed happy enough playing back-up to David de Gea but there is an almighty difference between life as a second-choice goalkeeper and that of a third-choice one.

Dean Henderson’s return from Sheffield United means the 33-year-old has not been included in a single matchday squad throughout 2020/21. In the 3-0 EFL Cup win at Luton, it was Lee Grant rather than Romero sitting on the bench.

United blocked Romero’s move to Goodison Park in the final few days of the summer transfer window, leaving the veteran shot-stopper – and his wife – furious (Star).

But you get the feeling that, if Everton come calling again, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would happily remove the barricades on the Old Trafford exit.

After all, Romero is due to become a free agent in July and £2.5 million is better than nothing. United would also save around £100,000-a-week in wages.

Then again, while the Old Trafford window appears to have opened, the door to Goodison Park might have slammed shut. Robin Olsen arrived on loan from Roma in Romero’s place in October, although there is no option-to-buy clause in the Swede’s contract.

Romero is at least expected to be offered the chance to make an emotional return to former club Racing, however.

“I dream of signing Chiquito [Romero], but he has to come with the conviction of wanting to return, knowing that he’s not going to earn in dollars or the amount of money he earns in Europe,” Racing chief Victor Blanco told Radio Colonia, translated by the Sun.
