Sunderland do not look equipped for a Championship survival bid and nor do they have the funds to replace a key man.
Duncan Watmore could be set to miss the rest of the Championship season with injury, according to the Chronicle (14.39).
Cruciate knee ligament damage would enforce yet another lengthy lay-off for Sunderland’s young star, who had only recently returned to first team action at the Stadium of Light.
Watmore had given the struggling Black Cats an instant lift, with his pace and drive sorely missing in the weeks prior to his recall.
But Sunderland could now be without the former England youth international again and that is a major blow for new manager Chris Coleman.
Watmore is the type of player who could have been key in Coleman’s side, with the Black Cats desperate for inspiration as they hope to move off the bottom of the Championship.
To make matters worse, the new boss conceded upon his arrival at the club that there will be little money to work with in January – as reported by the Guardian.
Sunderland were struggling enough with Watmore in the side; to now be without him and without the funds to recruit a replacement is a significant issue.
Coleman had enough on his plate at the Stadium of Light already and this latest development has only made his task harder.
