Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic have taken Chelsea defender Kyle Jameson on a fortnight’s trial ahead of a potential season-long loan.

There aren’t too many clubs in European football willing to make young players an essential part of their squad while simultaneously lifting silverware on a regular basis.

Therefore, Celtic are something of an anomalie. Which is why Kyle Jameson, the Chelsea-owned defender currently on trial in Glasgow, should jump at the chance of joining the Scottish champions this summer.

According to the Daily Record, the 18-year-old will spent the next two weeks training with Celtic after Dedryck Boyata was ruled out for three months with a knee injury.

And that in itself is an indictment of the trust Rodgers places in young players. Boyata was one of the first names on the team-sheet from January onwards as Celtic sealed an undefeated domestic treble last season.

And the fact that Rodgers believes Jameson could fill the void caused by the Belgian’s absence reflects the trust Rodgers is willing to place in young talents.

The 6ft 3ins stopper is likely to join on a season-long loan deal if he impresses over the coming fortnight. Therefore, he could go from Chelsea’s academy to Celtic’s first-team, playing in front of 60,000 at Parkhead and possibly even sampling Champions League nights, within the space of a few months.

This could be the break Jameson, who was brought into Chelsea’s youth system in January and has also had a spell with Everton, has been crying out for. After all, it’s well established that academy prospects face an uphill struggle forcing their way into The Blues’ first-team, John Terry still the most recent example.

Yet, Jameson will be hoping that a short-term exit could prove the springboard for an exciting career. Fellow Chelsea starlets Tammy Abraham, Kasey Palmer, Izzy Brown and co shone away from Stamford Bridge last season and, under Rodgers’ tutelage, Jameson may follow in their footsteps.
