Brendan Galloway joined West Bromwich Albion ahead of Newcastle United last season, but now he is headed for rivals Sunderland.

Having finally confirmed Simon Grayson as their new manager, relegated Sunderland are able to get their summer transfer business under way.

And bizarrely, Grayson appears to be echoing the moves made by previous boss David Moyes for Everton’s fringe men, with Sky Sports revealing loan bids for Tyias Browning and Brendan Galloway, plus a permanent offer for Aiden McGeady.

But Sunderland fans should be delighted that the club have seemingly been able to convince Galloway to drop down a divison – particularly after rivals Newcastle United failed to make a similar move this time last year, according to the Chronicle.

Galloway instead headed to West Bromwich Albion, where his career stagnated somewhat as he made just three Premier League appearances.

His signing still represents a coup at Championship level, though, and should offer Sunderland some encouragement for the coming campaign.

While the Black Cats’ aims for the season are still up in the air as they continue to conduct business, they have been able to recruit a player, in Galloway, who was a target for pre-season title favourites Newcastle last term.

Rafa Benitez’s side ended up winning the league without Galloway, but Sunderland will hope they too can top the table with the Everton loanee in their ranks.
