William Carvalho has long been linked with a move to the Emirates and has been called up by Portugal for the UEFA Under-21 European Championship.
Arsenal’s potential capture of Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho could yet hinge on the midfielder impressing for Portugal at the UEFA Under-21 European Championship in Czech Republic.
The 23-year-old has been called up by manager Rui Jorge for the finals and will likely be eager to impress at the tournament and seal a move to the Premier League in the process.
Carvalho will get no easy rides though, with Portugal facing a group of death that also features Sweden, Italy and England.
The 23-year-old is likely to start against the Three Lions in their tournament opener on June 18th, and with Arsene Wenger and several other Premier League managers likely to be keeping a close eye on proceedings, the defensive midfielder will need to be at his best.
Arsenal have long been linked with a move for Carvalho, with the Mirror recently reporting that the Gunners were considering a money-plus-player deal that would see Joel Campbell move in the opposite direction.
Under the terms of the reported deal, the North London club would shell out £21.5 million to bring the youngster to the Emirates.
But if he underwhelms in the Czech Republic, Wenger may opt against the move with Francis Coquelin continuing to impress.
