Rangers reportedly want just £5million for left-back Borna Barisic this month, with Watford reportedly seeing a bid rejected. But surely, Newcastle have got to be considering a move for the Ibrox defender?

Barisic, 29, could be the next Rangers player to follow Nathan Patterson out of the exit door at Ibrox. Scotland international Patterson has joined Everton for an enormous £16million, with as much as £12millio up front.

The Record reports that Croatia international Barisic could be allowed to leave Ibrox for a measly £5million. Watford have tabled a £2million bid, and the further inclusion of £1.5million has not tempted the Gers.

Newcastle, meanwhile, desperately need a left-back. Jamal Lewis has been indifferent since joining the club from Norwich City, while Paul Dummett was hardly impressive even in the Championship. Matt Ritchie is a winger.

Why Newcastle should consider move for Rangers ace Barisic…

Eddie Howe’s side remain perilously in the relegation zone. Some way from safety, the club need players that are going to hit the ground running and offer immediate quality. Kieran Trippier will certainly do that.

But the club still need a centre-back or two, a left-back, a midfielder and cover for injured duo Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson. So, bringing in a player that is experienced, a fighter, and technically good is key.

Creativity is crucial, as is defensive nous. Barisic has it in abundance, regarded as his country’s first-choice left-back and with numerous appearances in Europe – he is perfect. A bargain at £5million.
