Liverpool have almost been flawless this season. Apart from the defeats to Watford and Atletico Madrid, they have arguably been the best team in Europe and not many can argue that.

The Reds were just as good last season as well. Jurgen Klopp’s side lost just once in the league and came up just one point short of defending champions Manchester City.

The league title is almost certainly theirs this season but if there’s one area where Liverpool can improve next term, it’s their midfield.

Former Red Greame Souness highlighted that Liverpool’s midfield weren’t doing enough last season and if you have to be really critical, the same can be said about them this campaign as well.

Souness said last March: “They don’t create too much and they don’t slip clever and cute passes in and I think that’s where they are coming unstuck. Six goals from five out and out midfielders is not enough. I worry for them now. That’s another kick.” (Sky Sports via The Mirror)

Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum and Fabinho have scored a combined total of seven goals in the league this season.

Liverpool’s famed front three have carried them to the title and Klopp certainly is happy about that.

However, Manchester City will come in firing next season and some added firepower in midfield will only be a positive for Klopp’s Liverpool.

RMC Sport have claimed that Liverpool are very interested in Lyon’s Houssem Aouar, who is valued at £44 million.

The Frenchman has scored nine goals and has provided seven assists in all competitions this season, more than any Liverpool midfielder.

Aouar averages 1.6 shots, 2.7 dribbles and a key pass every game which is a very good offensive return for a central midfielder. (WhoScored)

If Liverpool can beat the competition to land him this summer, their midfield will be a lot more dangerous next season, and Souness’ big problem will finally be solved.
