Scottish Premiership champions Celtic are reportedly set to sign Boli Mbombo from Austrian Bundesliga outfit Rapid Vienna.
It seems only a matter of time before Boli Mbombo becomes Celtic’s second signing of the summer transfer window.
The reigning Scottish Premiership champions went into the summer crying out for a centre-half and a left-back. And while Cristopher Jullien arriving last week to fill the void left by Dedryck Boyata’s departure, Mbombo is now set to give Neil Lennon a brand new option out wide with The Times claiming that a £3 million deal is close for the Rapid Vienna flyer.
New director of football Nicky Hammond deserves huge credit for fixing two problem positions within weeks of his arrival.
But if there is a downside to Mbombo’s impending switch, it’s that one of Celtic’s most promising academy graduates could see his route into the first-team blocked – perhaps forever.
The Hoops pride themselves upon their tendency to promote from within but Glasgow-born 21-year-old Calvin Miller looks further away from a first-team role than ever.
A left-back with huge promise, Miller exploded onto the scene towards the end of the 2017/18 season and looked set to build on his excellent start to life in the senior set-up by establishing himself as Kieran Tierney’s back up.
Instead, Miller will return to Parkhead this summer following loan spells at Dundee and Ayr United and find himself well as far down the pecking order as ever. Even if Tierney goes, Mbombo and possibly even Jonny Hayes could still force the youngster into the background.
At 21, the time has come for Miller to play regularly at senior level. Is it clear now that he has to leave Celtic to push on in his career?
