According to a report from the Sun (July 5, page 51), Wolves have agreed to pay £15.8 million to sign Rui Patricio from Sporting Lisbon, despite the fact that they thought they would be able to snap him up on a free transfer.

Do not be fooled, though, Wolves have still secured themselves an absolute bargain.

The 30-year-old stopper terminated his contract with Sporting last month, meaning that he was available on a free transfer, but the Sun now report that Sporting were due a payment for his services – one that has now been paid by Wolves.

The 6ft 2in goalkeeper is one of the continent’s finest shot-stoppers, and he is extensively experienced in playing at the very highest level, having made 460 career appearances for Sporting, as well as earning 73 international caps for Portugal.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are much fancied this season, and many fans and pundits alike are backing them to secure a top 10 finish in the Premier League table.

Having someone like Rui Patricio amongst their ranks will surely go a long way to helping them do just that.

Despite initially thinking that they had brought him to Molineux for nothing, £15.8 million must still be classed as a real bargain for Wolves.
