Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Fluminense goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluxga, with UOL reporting the young Brazilian will be handed a big pay rise at Anfield.

This may not be the Kylian Mbappe, Jadon Sancho or Kai Havertz deal many, admittedly social media-based, fans were demanding but surely the Premier League champions deserve the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the transfer market.

After all, Liverpool are the masters when it comes to identifying future superstars and helping them realise their vast potential under the bearded, bespectacled and undoubtedly brilliant Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds snapped up two of the game’s most talented teenagers, Sepp van der Berg and Harvey Elliott, last summer and are looking to repeat the trick one year on.

According to UOL, a deal that will see Pitaluga swap Fluminense for Merseyside is edging closer.

Talks between the two clubs have reached an advanced stage in the past few days, with Liverpool viewing the youngster as the ‘heir apparent’ to fellow Brazilian Alisson Becker.

And who better for Pitaluga to learn from than arguably the finest shot-stopper on planet earth today?

The report adds the South American has a German passport, which means Liverpool should be able to circumvent potential work permit problems, while Pitaluga would earn a substantial pay rise at the 2019 European champions.

Fluminense hope to negotiate a sell-on clause in the teenager’s contract – and that certainly makes sense.

After all, Liverpool have frequently made huge profits on fringe players and unproven youngsters in the Michael Edwards era, earning more than £50 million for Dominic Solanke, Danny Ward, Brad Smith and Jordon Ibe.
