Watford are planning for the January transfer window with Nimes midfielder Matteo Ahlinvi and Hamburg defender Stephan Ambrosius on the radar, according to reports across Europe.

When Vladimir Ivic became the latest victim of the trigger-happy Pozzo regime on Saturday, the reaction from outside Hertfordshire was sadly predictable.

Yes, Watford are fifth in the Championship table and well-placed to secure an immediate return to the Premier League.

But, as each and every Hornets fan will tell you, the performances have been nothing short of dreadful throughout 2020/21 with Ivic failing miserably to coax the mercurial talents out of arguably the division’s most talented crop of players.

Then again, it remains to be seen whether Watford’s newest new boss, former Dinamo Tbilsi coach Xisco Munoz, is more Jokanovic and less Ivic, a masterstroke of an appointment or sheer madness.

The Hornets are not short of gifted midfielders but, according to FootMercato, Xisco could be joined at Vicarage Road by 21-year-old Benin international Ahlinvi.

A tidy passer who likes to stick the boot in, Ahlinvi should add energy and industry at the heart of Xisco’s team.

BILD, meanwhile, claims that Watford have joined Celtic, AC Milan and co in the race for Ambrosius, Hamburg’s powerhouse Germany U21 centre-half.

Ambrosius is due to become a free agent next year after rejecting the chance to extend his contract at the former European champions.
