Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly joined the race to sign Kieran Tierney from Celtic, and have the funds to match their rival’s planned bid.
Tierney is undoubtedly the best left-back in the Scottish Premiership. The Hoops academy graduate has been superb since breaking into the side at Parkhead, demonstrating his ability to step up on the big stages of the Champions League, and his versatility to play anywhere across the back line for club and country.
He has captained Scotland in a friendly against The Netherlands – which also saw Tierney play at centre-back – so it is little surprise that the 21-year-old has a long list of admirers in the Premier League.
Interestingly, the Mail adds that Wolves have the funds to compete with Everton should they make that eight-figure bid, but Tierney is said to be likely to be less keen on a move to Molineux at this stage of his career, leaving Nuno’s men in a similar boat to Bournemouth.
While the report suggests that Wolves may not appeal to Tierney, it would be little surprise if the left-back was actually tempted by a switch to Molineux ahead of their first season back in the Premier League.
Wolves are clearly not looking to make up the numbers and simply secure 17th spot on their return to England’s top table. Bringing in star players like Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota is a real sign of intent, and potential targets must find it difficult not to have their heads turned by what the club are doing and the path they are looking to put themselves on.
