Boro reportedly wanted to bring £18m winger Traore back to the Championship after just six Premier League starts for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Adama Traore poses during a portrait session as he is unveiled as a new signing for Wolverhampton Wanderers, at Molineux on August 7, 2018 in Wolverhampton, England.

Middlesbrough held discussions about a deadline day swoop for Adama Traore but Wolverhampton Wanderers had no interest in letting him return to the Riverside, according to the Northern Echo.

Traore become Wolves’ record signing when he moved to Molineux last summer for a fee of £18 million (Telegraph) but, after a bright start, he has fallen down the pecking order under Nuno Espirito Santo.

The former Barcelona youngster has started just six Premier League games for Wolves, although his rapid pace has often seen him utilised as an impact sub.

As a result, Middlesbrough had hoped that they could bring Traore back to the North East on loan until the end of the season, according to the Northern Echo.

The 23-year-old enjoyed the best season of his career in 2017/18, firing Boro into the play-offs with 10 assists and five goals in the Championship.

But it is understood that Wolves were not willing to let Traore go after just half a season in the famous golden shirt. Understandably, they seem to think there is a lot more to come for a player with undoubted potential.

This sums up a frustrating deadline day for Middlesbrough, who also failed to recruit Kamil Grosicki and Jacob Murphy.
