Wolves are reportedly working on a deal to sign Strasbourg defender Alexander Djiku in the January transfer window, with Southampton also keen on the Ghana international.

According to GhanaSoccerNet, the Premier League side are pushing to bring the 28-year-old French-born centre-back to Molineux in the new year, with Wolves coming close to signing Djiku in the summer transfer window, though a deal failed to come through.

As per the report, Djiku has dreams of playing in the Premier League, and Wolves could be set to sign the Ligue 1 defender in the coming months, with the 15-cap centre-back seemingly on the verge of agreeing a deal to join Bruno Lage’s side in January.

Wolves lost three long-term centre-backs in the summer in Conor Coady, Romain Saiss and Willy Boly with Nathan Collins the club’s only defender to join in the market, with West Midlands giants set to make the January window the month where they reinforce the backline.

Whilst Wolves’ defensive record has been quite solid this season, there’s no denying that adding another centre-back to their ranks in January would be a wise move, and Djiku is looking every more likely to be that player for the Molineux side, much to the dismay of Southampton.

The Saints were reportedly interested in the Ghanaian international in the summer, however, it’s Wolves who now looks set to land Strasbourg star Djiku, who could see his worth increase if the defender impresses in Qatar this November for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Hailed as an ‘outstanding’ talent by Ghana manager Charles Akonnor, Djiku would be an ideal signing for Wolves this January as Lage looks to expand his centre-back options in the winter, and beating a Premier League rival will only make the deal that much sweeter.

Moreover, Djiku is in the prime of his career, and accomplishing his dream of playing in the Premier League could see Wolves get even better performances out of the centre-back in proceeding seasons, with the defender also ideal for how Lage wants to play.
