Lazio are ready to let Fortuna Wallace leave Stadio Olimpico on a free transfer but Wolverhampton Wanderers look set to miss out on the defender for the second year in a row, according to Tuttomercatoweb.

With Conor Coady and Willy Boly both producing perhaps their worst Premier League performances during Sunday’s 4-0 thrashing at West Ham United, defensive reinforcements can’t come soon enough for some Wolves fans.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side haven’t looked themselves in recent weeks.

A usually well-drilled Wolves side appeared strangely vulnerable in the 3-1 defeat to Manchester City, before the rampaging Michail Antonio ripped them to shreds to inspire a score line no-one forecast.

But if Wolves were relying on super-agent Jorge Mendes to bring some defensive depth to the Black Country before next week’s transfer deadline, it seems they will be disappointed.

Lazio News reported earlier in September that Wolves hoped to finally tie up a deal for Wallace, one year after his £6.5 million move to England fell through due to work permit problems (Cittaceleste).

The 25-year-old is out of favour at Lazio and, according to TMW, Simone Inzaghi’s Scudetto-chasing side are willing to terminate the final ten months of his contract to get his wages off the books.

However, Wallace is expected to join Malatyaspor in Turkey instead.

Wolves would need special dispensation from the FA to sign a South American who has yet to win a cap for the Brazilian national team.

After a move was blocked last summer, it seems the deal is once again entangled in red tape.
