Wolves are reportedly plotting a bid to sign Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who is also on Liverpool’s radar despite the 21-year-old moving to Europe this summer from River Plate.

According to the Sun, Bruno Lage’s side are very interested in recruiting the Argentine midfielder, with gears already in motion to make a bid for the Benfica star in January as Wolves look to make yet another statement signing from Portugual after their move for Matheus Nunes.

With reports that Fernandez has a £103m release clause in his Benfica contract, signing the youngster could result in a club-record move from Wolves, who also face competition from Liverpool, who too have been reportedly impressed by the midfielder’s early performances in Lisbon.

One of the most exciting talents to come from Argentina in quite some time, Fernandez has caught the eye of many since signing for Benfica, and a January move could already be on the cards should Wolves launch a bid for the 21-year-old in the winter window.

Indeed, Benfica command a strong position in any deal involving Fernandez given how recent the play has moved to Portugal and the size of his release clause, and for a club like Wolves, matching the £103m asking price is way above what the Molineux side can manage.

Labelled by River Plate fan group La Pagina Millonaria as a ‘tremendous’ performer, Fernandez moving to a bigger club feels like a matter of ‘when’ and not ‘if’ with reports that top sides are interested in the midfielder, but for Wolves, this could be one battle too big for Lage’s side.

Wolves signing Enzo Fernandez ahead of Liverpool would be a miracle

Fernandez has been something of a revelation for Benfica following his move transatlantic move from River Plate to Portugual, with interest already high in Argentine in what could be the Lisbon giants’ next big outgoing transfer in the years to come, yet Wolves winning the race to sign the midfielder over Liverpool would be something of a miracle.

After all, Wolves went big this summer on Nunes, and with clubs like Liverpool also interested in Fernandez, Lage’s side beating the Premier League giants would be quite the coup, especially with how high the Benfica star’s release clause is.
