Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly at the front of the queue for Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips and are waiting for the January window to open.
The summer transfer window may have only just closed this week, but Wolves appear to have wasted little time making plans for January with The Sun on Sunday (11/8; page 59) reporting that Nuno Espirito Santo’s men are eyeing a fresh move for Leeds star Kalvin Phillips.
Leeds holding onto Phillips throughout the window looked to be one of their best pieces of business of the summer after his superb first campaign playing under Marcelo Bielsa.
The Sun on Sunday (11/8; page 59) reports that Wolves, along with Aston Villa and Burnley, wanted to sign the 23-year-old, but Leeds’ £30 million asking price put the Premier League admirers off a move.
However, the top flight trio appear to still be in the queue for Phillips’ signature, with The Sun on Sunday noting that Wolves lead the race and are planning to make a bid in the hope that United’s valuation has dropped with contract talks yet to lead to an agreement.
The report adds that Phillips wants to play at the highest level and push for a potential England call-up.
Leeds fans would be forgiven for feeling that there is even greater pressure on achieving promotion this season. It is difficult to imagine Marcelo Bielsa staying for a third year in the Championship – though plenty questioned whether he would stay for a second term – while a number of players have been brought in on loan.
And of course, Phillips remaining at Leeds looks extremely unlikely if the Whites fail to end their top flight exile this season.
But if Leeds go into January right in the promotion mix, it seems just as unlikely that they will be willing to listen to offers for one of their most important players – so perhaps, Wolves may be set for disappointment if they are expecting the youngster’s asking price to drop significantly.
