Wolverhampton Wanderers are considering a bid for the £25 million Athletic Bilbao centre-back Unai Nunez, according to the Times.
Try as they might, one of the most historic clubs in La Liga have failed to tie down one of their most highly-rated players.
As Athletic’s sporting director Rafa Alkorta told Naiz recently, Nunez has so far ‘declined offers’ to put pen to paper on a new long-term contract.
This is a source of major frustration for the Basque giants.
After all, they are understandably desperate to remove a current release-clause of £25 million as interest rises from all over Europe in their Spanish international centre-half.
In an era where top-quality defenders are few and far between, and therefore massively overpriced, £25 million for Nunez feels like a bargain.
Perhaps that is why Wolves are considering a bid of their own for a man who has also been linked with Arsenal, Everton and West Ham United since the turn of the year.

The 23-year-old only started 16 La Liga games in 2019/20 but, despite failing to secure a regular place in Gaizka Garitano’s XI, he is emerging as a key part of Luis Enrique’s plans with just ten months to go until Euro 2021 kicks off.
Nunez was one of four central defenders including in the most recent Spain squad, alongside Sergio Ramos, Pau Lopez and Diego Llorente.
Adama Traore was handed his maiden call-up too after an exceptional year at Wolverhampton Wanderers, joining Nunez in the 23-man roster. Perhaps the winger could put in a good word about life at Molineux.
