Wolverhampton Wanderers have been given the chance to sign another Jorge Mendes client in the shape of £36 million Valencia winger Goncalo Guedes, as reported by the Mail.
A few years ago, Wolves would have chomped your hand off the bone if you had offered up one of the most exciting attacking talents in the whole of La Liga.
In 2017/18, Guedes was the star man of a Valencia side threatening to shatter the established order and win the Spanish title for the first time since a young Rafa Benitez was gesticulating wildly in the Mestalla dugout.
Three years on, however, Guedes’ malaise reflects that of his club as a whole.
Crisis club Valencia have tumbled down the table, going from title challengers to relegation battlers, while their £36 million forward has shown only flashes of the quality that saw some label him the heir apparent to Cristiano Ronaldo not so long ago.
Guedes, who scored the winning goal in Portugal’s 1-0 Nations League triumph over Holland in 2019, has started just a third of Valencia’s La Liga matches in 2020/21.
So Wolves would be forgiven for harbouring a doubt or two after being offered the chance to hand Guedes a fresh start in England.
Patrick Cutrone, on loan at Valencia as things stand, could go in the other direction if the deal does happen.
Guedes apparently believes that he would be better suited to Premier League football and you can see why. At his best, the former Benfica winger is an explosive, old-school winger in the Pedro Neto or Adama Traore mould.
