According to The Sun, Wolves now want to sign Christian Benteke from Crystal Palace, just weeks after he was offered to Burnley.

What’s the story?

Well, Patrick Vieira is keen to sell the £120,000-a-week man, and the Belgian was even offered to Burnley as the Eagles attempted to offload their club-record signing.

Benteke has struggled at Selhurst Park ever since Roy Hodgson replaced Sam Allardyce, scoring just 37 goals in 177 appearances for the south Londoners following a £27m move from Liverpool in 2016.

Now, after loaning Fabio Silva to Anderlecht, Wolves are keen to bolster their frontline by signing the 31-year-old, who made just 11 Premier League starts last season.

Benteke has entered the final 12 months of his contract with Crystal Palace, so he wouldn’t cost Bruno Lage too much – especially with Vieira looking to sell him.

The Belgium international has lost his place under the Frenchman, with Jean-Philippe Mateta and Odsonne Edouard preferred in attack, while Wilfried Zaha has also been used centrally at times.

Burnley could pose interesting challenge to Wolves

Despite dropping into the Championship, we think Burnley would actually have a good case for signing Benteke – if he agrees to a significant wage cut, that is.

For one, Vincent Kompany now holds the reins at Turf Moor, as established figure in English football, as well as in Belgian football where Benteke made his name.

The Clarets have expressed interest in the Kinshasa-born striker on a number of occasions, and the towering forward even accidentally claimed that he had joined Burnley on Twitter back in 2016 – maybe it’s written in the stars.

Of course, Wolves can offer Benteke Premier League football, but the chance to be the main man once again, under a fellow Belgian in Kompany, could be an attractive proposition for the Crystal Palace No.20 this summer.
