Goal.com has claimed that Newcastle United are interested in Nice goalkeeper Walter Benitez – but Wolverhampton Wanderers are leading the race for his signature.

The Argentine, who is contracted until 2020, has impressed for the Ligue 1 side this season.

And, according to Goal.com, Wolves and Newcastle are among the Premier League sides interested in bringing him to England.

The report adds that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are favourites over the Magpies to land him.

Goalkeeper isn’t an urgent matter for either side.

Rui Patricio has had a decent first season at Molineux, starting 37 of Wanderers’ 38 Premier League games.

The same could be said for Martin Dubravka at Newcastle, with the Slovakian stopper playing every minute for Rafael Benitez’s side last term.

According to Transfermarkt, 26-year-old Benitez is valued at around £7.6 million.

If Manchester City win the FA Cup final against Watford this month then Wolves will be granted entry into the Europa League qualifying phase, which might appeal to the South American goalkeeper.
