Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly entered the race to sign highly rated Benfica and Portugal defender Ruben Dias, according to The Express & Star.

The 22-year-old has come through the ranks at the Lisbon club and already has 85 first-team appearances to his name despite his young age, according to Transfermarkt.

Dias played 30 league games last term as Benfica won the Primeira Liga, while this summer he was part of the Selecao contingent that lifted the inaugural UEFA Nations League.

The Amadora-born ace is deemed one of the brightest youngsters from the Iberian nation and has recently been linked to Arsenal (Daily Mail) and Manchester United (The Sun).

However, Wolves have one advantage in that Dias is part of the Gestifute agency, headed by Jorge Mendes, who has close links to Molineux and has brokered a number of deals for them in the past few years.

Dias, who reportedly has a £57million release clause and is contracted to Benfica until 2023, would join a club with numerous Portuguese players and staff on the books, including manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

For the West Midlanders, it would represent a huge coup to sign Dias ahead of two of the traditionally biggest names in English football, and could go a long way to seeing them reach levels way beyond last season’s seventh-placed finish and FA Cup semi-final run.
